To boost Japanese investment in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Government will allocate a separate industrial zone for Japan.

This was revealed by Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed at a press conference, who also said that the Government also plans to extend special facilities to its leading development partner country.

Bangladesh Government will allocate separate industrial zone for Japan so that the country can boost investment in Bangladesh, Mr. Ahmed said.

The Minister had earlier met the International Affairs, Economic, Trade and Industrial Affairs Vice Minister of Japan, Narihiko Ishiguro, who led the Japanese delegation.

"The Government has planned to set up a separate industrial zone for Japanese investment, but the location of the zone is not yet decided," the Commerce Minister informed.

"Japan provides duty-free access to Bangladeshi apparels products and there is a great demand for Bangladeshi garment products in Japan”, he told members of the media.

He added, “Japan production of garments meet only 50% of its demand and it has to import the rest of its requirements. So, we shall take special initiatives to enhance our apparel exports to Japan.”

"As per the Sixth-Five-Year Plan, we are trying to diversify export destinations as well as products, so, Japan is considered very important for Bangladesh,” Tofail Ahmed informed.

"The Government is trying to lessen dependence on clothing items, so steps are being taken to increase export of other goods like ceramics, leather goods and engineering commodities,” he noted.
